Summer in Alabama means sunshine, backyard barbecues, and plenty of sweet treats. But while it’s the season for fun activities, summer can wreak havoc on your teeth.

At Vandervoort Family Dentistry, we understand that you want to enjoy the season, but we also want you to protect your smile. That’s why we’re offering tooth-friendly snacks and providing advice on what to avoid so you can stay cool and cavity-free this summer.

Healthy Summer Snack Options

Many delicious snack options won’t harm your oral health.

Consider keeping these handy during the summer and all year:

  • Crunchy vegetables — Water-rich veggies such as cucumber slices, celery sticks, and carrots can naturally clean your teeth and keep you hydrated.
  • Fresh fruits — Low-citrus fruits, such as strawberries, apple slices, watermelon, and grapes, are delicious and nutritious.
  • Delightful dairy — Calcium-rich dairy such as string cheese, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese are all good choices for snacking.
  • Powerful protein — Consider high-protein snacks such as hard-boiled eggs, sliced turkey, and almonds.

Culprits to Avoid

Some of your favorite summer treats could be harming your teeth and gums, so you may want to consider limiting these or skipping them altogether:

  • Sweet tea — Even though sweet tea is a southern staple, it’s loaded with sugar. Sipping sweet tea throughout the day can increase your susceptibility to tooth decay. Instead, try unsweetened tea with lemon or mint.
  • Popsicles and ice cream — What would summer be without ice cream? Many frozen treats are high in sugar and include artificial dyes and flavors. If you indulge in these sweet treats, be sure to brush your teeth afterward.
  • Citrus fruits — Acidic fruits have plenty of vitamins, but they can weaken your tooth enamel over time. Enjoy them in moderation, and rinse your mouth when you’re finished.
